Mahara as ePortfolio Platform for EUfolio

by Andrea Ghoneim

This collection gives an insight into the setup of, training with and use of Mahara by EUfolio partners and piloting schools and students. The project EUfolio. EU classroom ePortfolios (2013-2015) has implemented ePortfolios - basing on Microsoft's ePortfolio solution (a blend of Office 365, Yammer and OneDrive) and the Open Source ePortfolio platform Mahara - in lower secondary classrooms across Europe.

Summer 2013: It is hot, and the Department of Interactive Media at Danube University Krems is still waiting for the server on which EUfolio Mahara is going to be hosted.

Never mind - we still have mahara.at to do some tests for the big day. And there is all the work with EUfolio pilot planning (WP4) - so we work our way through till EUfolio Mahara can be started.

Erich Herber, Christian Fertl and Andrea Ghoneim of Danube University Krems are also in close collaboration with Anastasia Economou and Antri Avraamidou form the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute. They are also checking out Mahara in order to prepare the Train-the-Trainer Workshop that is scheduled to be held in Krems in October 2013.

Andrea, anxious to forget how to communicate all the basics of the platform after she had explored them herself, starts the Blog "Getting Started with Mahara" in the end of July. The blog is kept on Mahara, of course ;-)

In the middle of September 2013, the Server finally arrives and Christian spends a lot of hours in the SetUp of EUfolio Mahara - just in time for an initial meeting of Erich Herber and the partners from Cyprus to "play" with it. Andrea also wants to join in the game and is the first to place content in the newly opened space. With the page "Mahara for Teachers" the first case studies of ePortfolio implementations go online - together with some links on how to get acquainted to Mahara and ePortfolios.

Mid-September 2013: the creation of Antri and Anastasia goes online - a group, set up for Pre- and Post-Workshop activities as well as for work during the meeting in Krems, of course. Mahara serves both as a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and a Community of Practice (CoP). A vast amount of information on teaching and learning with ePortfolios and Mahara is made available to the workshop participants by the partners from the Cyprus Pedagogocal Institute (CPI), spiced with a bunch of inspiring working activities (WA).

in a 2-days workshop, hosted by Danube University Krems, well prepared trainers (EUfolio-partners Antri and Anastasia from the CPI, with some assistance by other partners) work with well prepared "students" - who are actually responsible for organising the teacher CPD in their country. In the end we are all proud of our achievements and ready to start the national trainings.

While we are most of the time busy with Mahara, Tim Francony and Kevin Marshall use the occasion to give us an introduction to Microsoft Office365 - and thus to make us see Microsoft's ePortfolio solution, as well.
